Age: 28
Canon: Bungou Stray Dogs
Canon Point: Chapter 57, shortly after the one month skip.

Background:

Wiki.

Personality:

Edgar Allan Poe is what one might call…eccentric.

He’s excitable, verbose, keeps a raccoon as a pet, and to top it all off he’s a recluse, making himself as mysterious to the world at large as any one of his novels.

However, this reclusive nature isn’t a brand-appropriate PR stunt. He suffers from a severe social anxiety that makes it difficult for him to form and maintain interpersonal relationships, and keeps him inside and away from the noise of chattering crowds as much as he can realistically help it. At his absolute worst he shuts himself off from everything and everyone in a spiral of panic.

The best workaround to this is his biggest passion: the creation and solving of mysteries. As a mystery novelist curiosity and reasoning are his two most notable driving forces, and he can’t resist the opportunity to either try and solve a perplexing mystery or to be the perplexing mystery. It’s so powerful a force that he can be anxiously stammering one moment and dramatically recounting the conditions of a mystery or his logic ad nauseam the next, even to a complete stranger. It isn't all just for show either--he's genuinely a detective genius. His skills are so noteworthy that they not only made him a top selling author but the master architect of the underground organization known only as The Guild, and even gave the greatest detective in the world, Edogawa Ranpo, a run for his money.

The last two points, though, reveal an uglier side of him. His intellectual defeat at the hands of Edogawa Ranpo sent him into a deep depressive episode that steered his life onto a dark turn. He spent six years plotting the perfect revenge, even going so far as to join the ranks of The Guild, a secret society of ability users headquartered in America with their clawed thumbs in quite a few pies all across the world. The organization and his climb to the top of it were only a means to an end, Poe himself disparaging the Guild as violent and greedy, readily offering up their greatest weaknesses as a means to up the ante against the only person that really mattered to him: Ranpo. Despite his words against the Guild he shows no remorse for the violent murder of Ranpo's friend at the hand of his ability, even laughing maniacally afterward at it and the possibility of his greatest rival doomed to wither and die stumped inside his fictional world.

Things, of course, didn't work out like that.

Poe was extended a roundabout hand of friendship, and formally left the Guild to stay in Japan and continue improving his writing in an attempt to one day finally stump Ranpo. His views on the other man have steadily began shifting from "rival" to "friend", going from needing only a little encouragement to help Ranpo and his organization in fights against their enemies to going out of his way to try and lift an upset Ranpo's spirits. While still socially anxious and awkward, it's clear this is the beginning to a much brighter chapter in Poe's life.

Where will it lead him? He'll just have to keep writing and see.

Abilities:

Black Cat in the Rue Morgue
Poe’s ability allows him to literally transport a reader into the setting of his stories. Whether it’s a properly printed and bound book, a manuscript, an e-mail or text message, as long as he’s written it and someone is reading it he can activate his ability even if the reader doesn't understand the language the story is written in.

Readers are brought to what appears to be a pocket dimension that looks and operates exactly as Poe has written, replacing and taking on the role of characters in the story. Everything inside the story feels real to those inside it, including any injuries gained, up to and including death. Upon escaping any injuries, including death, are rendered null, though the only known way to escape a story is to solve its mystery.

While someone is inside a story Poe is aware of what's happening to them via a mental connection, as if he were reading it himself.

Alignment:

Aiada - Poe’s motivation to join The Guild was envy of Edogawa Ranpo’s deductive ability, and to bide time and resources so Poe could properly take out his revenge. Later his admiration of the same man is what keeps him in Japan, writing and becoming an ally and asset to both Ranpo and his colleagues.

Other: Poe will be arriving with his pet raccoon, Karl. Karl doesn't have any special abilities or outstanding characteristics, he's just cute and fuzzy.
